 This study focused on perceived benefits of participation in group fitness activities, intramurals and sports clubs. They surveyed 1176 students in higher education. There was a significant difference in results when comparing the perceived benefits of the 3 types of activities. There is a decline amongst college students in participation in physical activity.  There is an increase of health problems such as hypertension and diabetes. Therefore, it is advantageous for universities to have enhanced recreational programs to get students moving. However, having fitness activities depends on university funding. Recreational sports on College campus’ allows for increased student involvement and is considered to enhance the student experience.  Participation in recreational sports on campus, increases student satisfaction and improves overall student growth. Group Fitness is growing in popularity. Group fitness includes exercise classes, often led by university students. Research has shown that group fitness using group dynamic principles was better than a standard exercise class.

This article looks at the more negative side of joining intramural sports in college. It mentions that Greek life and sports are two of the main organizations on college campuses. Joining these organizations allows students to make friends and hangout with new people. As you know, most college students like to go out and have a good time with their friends, most of the time alcohol is involved. Well this study/survey says that students who participate in Greek life or sports of any kind are more likely to drink alcohol more frequently than regular students who aren’t involved in either of those groups. The study states that peer influences play a major role in how college students get involved with alcohol. Hazing can take place in the Greek community and even in the athletic community.

This article explores the risk of alcohol consumption among club and intramural athletes as well. However, this article discusses how the physical activity aspect of sports increases alcohol consumption. The more physical the sport, the more the student feels the need to drink. It also states that most students who played sports in high school but did not go on to play at the collegiate level experience more alcohol abuse do to the fact that they are forced to find their new identity. It also discusses how when you start in college you transition from adolescence to adulthood which can cause unwanted stress and ultimately more drinking.

This study talks about how the intramural programs that are offered at colleges around the nation need to set more guidelines in place so that students don’t abuse the social aspect of intramural sports. Also, the article states that intramural sports help students get a positive sense of well-being and reduces stress.

This source focuses more on the health and physical side of intramural sports. It states that while intramural sports can be fun it is important to make sure you are also taking care of your body. Most students who join intramural sports are doing it to meet people or to get back into shape. If someone is playing for the second reason it is likely that they haven’t seen participated in any physical activity recently. It also talks about how you need to make sure that you have the right equipment for the right sport in order to avoid any unwanted injuries. It also provides tips for preparing for your sport such as staying hydrated and checking the field for any hazardous objects.
